Located in the midstream area of the Saru River in Hokkaido, the town of Biratori boasts vast natural
landscapes nurtured by the rich forests and valleys of the Hidaka Mountain Range. Here, the Ainu culture,
which is rooted in the indigenous people's heritage, is carefully preserved and passed down from person to
person amidst this abundant nature. From dances expressing gratitude and respect for the earth and animals, to
rituals, seasonal changes, and culinary traditions, as well as techniques in hunting, gathering, and crafts,
the area is known for its profound artistic depth.
This initiative focuses not only on well-known elements of Ainu culture such as traditional dances, cuisine,
and crafts, but also on the less-publicized aspects of cultural transmission, including hunting, rituals, and
forest conservation efforts aimed at passing the cultural baton to the next generation. We aim to provide
experiences and tours that allow participants to immerse themselves in Ainu culture and engage wholeheartedly
in the creation of future traditions.
In this tour, participants will learn about the region's initiatives for forest development aimed at the next
generation over the next 300 years, as well as the relationship between nature and the Ainu people, all while
walking through the forest and engaging their senses. Additionally, by interacting with the younger generation
who are inheriting the local Ainu culture, participants can experience the traditions and wisdom that have
been cherished for generations, as well as the efforts, passion, and hope for the future. Throughout the
journey, local experienced English-speaking guides will lead the way.
